The individual tuition we offer is mainly aimed at artists or designers who work in another discipline, or for those that want to learn specific aspects of ceramics. Its also ideal for those who want to set up their own studio practice, particularly if you would like to make the transition from hobbyist to professional. We can work with other creative educators who would like some tailored learning to pass on skills to their own students. It is usually a more intensive learning experience than the group courses, and is tailored around you.
Both of us have a variety of experience in ceramic practice accumulated over 2 decades, and can help you improve your skills and knowledge (and confidence). Choose to focus on different kinds of handbuilding such as coilbuilding and slab construction, wheelthrowing, and the ceramic surface- slips, monoprinting, glazing and other techniques. You may wish to learn about firing, making glazes or applying decals. We can help you gain enough knowledge to set up your own small studio practice; learning about the practical aspects such as recycling your clay, advice on what equipment/tools to buy etc. (Please note we no longer offer tuition in mouldmaking or slip casting.)
Tuition can be a one off session of a couple of hours, or over several sessions depending on what we are focusing on. Materials, tuition, preparation and use of tools and equipment are included, and glazing/finishing for one off sessions. Before booking tuition, get in touch and we can arrange a visit to the studio (we don’t charge for this). We can then chat over your project to create a plan and a timeline, and get an idea of your aims and focus. Availability for tuition is usually Tuesday – Thursday between 11 and 5, booked a few weeks in advance.
